Student Science Projects
  • Chinese mitten crabs - These interesting exotic crabs have invaded many of our local creeks since they were accidentally introduced from a ship's bilge water into the San Francisco Bay. These crustaceans are not protected and offer many potential project opportunities: such as number of crab burrows, size of burrows, depth of burrows, size of crabs, numbers of crabs per burrow, crab-crayfish interactions, male versus female crab numbers, crab dispersal, speed of dispersal, what are crab predators, what to crabs feed on, etc. . .?
  • Blacklight trapping at night - What insects are attracted to blacklights at night? Are there differences between early evening and late evening? Are there differences between near a creek and away from riparian habitats? What is the diversity of insects captured? What is the abundance of insects captured?
  • Creek flow rate versus rainfall - What is the relationship between rainfall and creek flow rate? Devise methods to assess rainfall and creek flow rate and chart their changes during the winter-spring season. By the way, most of Santa Clara County's rain occurs between November and March.
